RINGLY

2013

Before the Apple Watch, there was Ringly.

Ringly’s first product was a cocktail ring and notification device.

Early Days

As the only electrical engineer in the three- person start-up, I designed and developed the circuitry that powered all Ringly’s products.

Electronics

I designed all the product’s key electronic features, enabling Ringly’s jewelry to connect to phones via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), vibrate for haptic feedback, light up with multiple colors, charge up, and reset without a button. To overcome the challenge of a tiny battery, we came up with a charging solution that was novel at the time — the carrying case was the charger.

Adafruit’s Lady Ada tears down my electronic design.

Flex Design

A folding flex PCB geometry packed all our technology into a tiny jewelry-sized volume. The result was so cute that Adafruit’s Lady Ada called it a ‘burrito of electronic love’ in her teardown of my design.

“Beautifully designed. Whoever did this did a really great job fitting it all together into a very wearable package.” [3:47]

Demo Day

We graduated from PCH’s hardware incubator, Highway 1, after touring factories in China and unveiling our wearable product at demo day in 2014.
